CHAPTER NINETEEN

Valerie woke groggily. It took her a moment to open her eyes. They felt like they were being pulled down by lead weights.

The room in which she found herself was familiar. To a professional like Valerie, she’d seen the inside of a psychiatric hospital room many times before. Visiting her sister Suzie recently, she’d seen enough of them outside of work, too.

But never from this position. Never while dressed in a hospital gown.

Valerie’s pulse raced.

Where am I? she thought. How did I end up in here?

She closed her eyes and shook her head, but it did nothing to remove the fog in her mind. The memory was hazy. Something bad had happened. Something she had done herself.

The door opened and a pale woman with short black hair and glasses entered the room, carrying a clipboard.

“Good morning, Valerie,” the woman said. “How are you feeling this morning?”

“Who are you?” Valerie said. “Where am I? What’s going on?”

“I’m Dr. Grimes,” the woman said. “You’re at Compton Hills Psychiatric Hospital. You’ve been here for two days now.”

“What happened?” Valerie said.

“You don’t remember?” the doctor asked.

“I…” Valerie said.

“You don’t remember what happened or you don’t remember being here?” the doctor said.

“A little of both, I guess… I’m an FBI agent. I was working on a case.” She tried to sit up, but her body ached and her head throbbed.

“You were shot,” the doctor said. “Three times, actually. It’s amazing you’re still alive. The paramedics said they couldn’t believe it. We did multiple surgeries to try to help you, but I have to be honest: I didn’t think you’d make it.”

“What happened after I was shot?” Valerie said.

“You were in a coma for two days,” the doctor said. “But you were starting to come out of it a couple of days ago.”

“Oh.” Valerie felt utterly drained and confused. She tried to remember, but she couldn’t. She pushed through her mind with all her will, but there was nothing there. It was a black void of nothingness.

“But this isn’t a normal hospital, it’s a psychiatric hospital room. The walls are padded so I don’t bash my brains off of them. Why am I here?”

The doctor nodded. “Yes, I’m afraid you had a psychotic break.”

Those words stuck in Valerie’s heart like a thorn. Especially the word “break.”

So, it’s finally happened, she thought. I’ve gone mad like my sister and mother.

“Where’s Charlie and Will?” Valerie asked, finally finding the strength to sit up and pull her feet onto the floor.

“Charlie is in the hospital, Valerie. He’ll survive. But I’m afraid to say that Will did not. He was shot point-blank in the heart.”

Valerie felt dizzy. She felt sick. Her friend, her colleague, had been murdered.

She started to cry.

“Was it the Bone Ripper?”

“Bone Ripper?” the doctor repeated. “Oh no, Valerie. It was you.”

Those words stopped her dead.

“No… That’s impossible!” Valerie screamed.

“I’m afraid you thought he was a serial killer and you went into a murderous rage. He tried to talk you out of holding the gun. He nearly succeeded.
