CHAPTER NINETEEN
Valerie woke groggily. It took her a moment to open her eyes. They felt like they were being pulled down by lead weights.
The room in which she found herself was familiar. To a professional like Valerie, sheâd seen the inside of a psychiatric hospital room many times before. Visiting her sister Suzie recently, sheâd seen enough of them outside of work, too.
But never from this position. Never while dressed in a hospital gown.
Valerieâs pulse raced.
Where am I? she thought. How did I end up in here?
She closed her eyes and shook her head, but it did nothing to remove the fog in her mind. The memory was hazy. Something bad had happened. Something she had done herself.
The door opened and a pale woman with short black hair and glasses entered the room, carrying a clipboard.
âGood morning, Valerie,â the woman said. âHow are you feeling this morning?â
âWho are you?â Valerie said. âWhere am I? Whatâs going on?â
âIâm Dr. Grimes,â the woman said. âYouâre at Compton Hills Psychiatric Hospital. Youâve been here for two days now.â
âWhat happened?â Valerie said.
âYou donât remember?â the doctor asked.
âIâ¦â Valerie said.
âYou donât remember what happened or you donât remember being here?â the doctor said.
âA little of both, I guess⦠Iâm an FBI agent. I was working on a case.â She tried to sit up, but her body ached and her head throbbed.
âYou were shot,â the doctor said. âThree times, actually. Itâs amazing youâre still alive. The paramedics said they couldnât believe it. We did multiple surgeries to try to help you, but I have to be honest: I didnât think youâd make it.â
âWhat happened after I was shot?â Valerie said.
âYou were in a coma for two days,â the doctor said. âBut you were starting to come out of it a couple of days ago.â
âOh.â Valerie felt utterly drained and confused. She tried to remember, but she couldnât. She pushed through her mind with all her will, but there was nothing there. It was a black void of nothingness.
âBut this isnât a normal hospital, itâs a psychiatric hospital room. The walls are padded so I donât bash my brains off of them. Why am I here?â
The doctor nodded. âYes, Iâm afraid you had a psychotic break.â
Those words stuck in Valerieâs heart like a thorn. Especially the word âbreak.â
So, itâs finally happened, she thought. Iâve gone mad like my sister and mother.
âWhereâs Charlie and Will?â Valerie asked, finally finding the strength to sit up and pull her feet onto the floor.
âCharlie is in the hospital, Valerie. Heâll survive. But Iâm afraid to say that Will did not. He was shot point-blank in the heart.â
Valerie felt dizzy. She felt sick. Her friend, her colleague, had been murdered.
She started to cry.
âWas it the Bone Ripper?â
âBone Ripper?â the doctor repeated. âOh no, Valerie. It was you.â
Those words stopped her dead.
âNo⦠Thatâs impossible!â Valerie screamed.
âIâm afraid you thought he was a serial killer and you went into a murderous rage. He tried to talk you out of holding the gun. He nearly succeeded.
